BME Pump

Project Description
Our team will design a pump apparatus that will pump ice slush into the body during laparoscopic surgery for partial nephrectomies. The ice will be packed around the outside of the kidney, bringing down the temperature of the kidney to about 15 degrees celsius.

Market Potential
The scope of the market for this device is not limited to partial nephrectomy procedures or even to laparoscopic surgeries. With the entire system being sterilizable, this device can be applied to any procedure where cooling a specified section of the body is desired. The Cardio-Thoracic department at The Washington University School of Medicine is anxious to test our device once it is ready.
